And as much as I'd like to keep it a secret, I think doing so is selfish, so I will share one of my 'secret' weapons for blending a vocal with a 2-track. If there wasnвЂ™t enough midrange in the beat, then IвЂ™d ADD midrange to it.Totally agree with everything Mr. The goal should to get it to sound like you mixed it from the multitracks and you wouldnвЂ™t mix the multitracks with a big olвЂ™ midrange scoop on the music would you? I would only cut midrange on the beat if there was too much midrange to begin with. I donвЂ™t believe in the whole вЂњcut some midrangeвЂќ stuff. If there wasnвЂ™t enough midrange in the beat, then IвЂ™d ADD midrange to it. Think of it like reverse engineering to get back to a point where you can then mix like normal. This will mimic normal 2buss compression when the beat is already compressed.

Compress that buss a couple dB at most and sidechain it from the beat. Then mix all the vocals and send them to a single stereo buss. ThatвЂ™s usually a combination of regular EQ, mid-side EQ for when I need to try and isolate stuff, and a dynamic EQ for the really tough stuff вЂ“ whichever of those I need to do the job (sometimes one, sometimes two, sometimes all three). Then IвЂ™ll вЂњfixвЂќ the mix as much as possible like a mastering engineer might. I use a transient plug on the beat to try and undo the typically massively over-limited and over-compressed soundвЂ¦ because beat makers like to crank it up to mastered volume and then go an additional 3dB because they are crazy.
